Joe South was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 28, 1940. He was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer.

He grew up in a musical family. His fathe was a bandleader and his mother was a singer.

Joe South began playing guitar at the age of eight and within a few years was playing in his father’s band. After high school, he moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music.

South’s big break came in 1962 when he was asked to write a song for country singer Bill Anderson. The song, “Pickin’ Wildflowers” became a hit and led to South writing more songs for Anderson.

In 1968, South had a hit of his own with “Games People Play” which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Pop Recording.

South continued to write and record throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Although he never again achieved the level of success he had with “Games People Play” he wrote the song “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” which was a hit for Elvis Presley.

He retired from the music business in the early 1990s but made a comeback in 2000 with the release of his first album in 15 years, ‘Classic Masters’.

South passed away on September 5, 2012, at the age of 72.

He was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019.
