Born in Seattle, Washington, Hendrix began playing guitar at the age of 15. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Army and trained as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. He was discharged the following year and returned to the Seattle area, where he played in various bands. In 1966, he moved to England and achieved commercial success with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Hendrix’s style of playing was unique and often incorporated feedback and other sound effects into his solos. He was also one of the first guitarists to experiment with stereophonic and quadraphonic sound recording techniques. His innovative approach to the instrument influenced many rock guitarists who followed him, including Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Jimi Hendrix died of drug-related complications on September 18, 1970, at the age of 27.
