Jerry Reed is an American country music singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is best known for his hit songs “East Bound and Down” (the theme song for the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit, in which Reed co-starred) and his cover of The Charlie Daniels Band track “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.“.

Reed was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1937. He began playing guitar at an early age, and by the age of 14 he was already performing on the local radio station. He soon began touring with country music legend Ernest Tubb.
In the 1960s, Reed began writing his own songs and released his first album, ‘The Unbelievable Guitar and Voice of Jerry Reed,’ in 1966. He had his first major hit with “East Bound and Down” in 1977.
Reed continued to release albums and tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2002.
He passed away in September of 2008, at the age of 71. His legacy continues to live on through his music.
