Charles-François Gounod (1818 – 1893) was a French composer, best known for his Ave Maria, based on a work by Bach. He is perhaps best remembered for his opera “Faust”, first performed in 1859, which became a staple in the operatic repertoire worldwide due to its captivating melodies and compelling narrative based on Goethe’s classic work.

Gounod was born in Paris, the son of a pianist mother and an artist father. His mother was his first piano teacher. He was educated at the Lycée Saint-Louis, where he remained until 1835. After taking his degree in philosophy, he began to study music with the Bohemian composer Anton Reicha. On Reicha’s death Gounod entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied under Fromental Halévy and Jean-François Lesueur.

Aside from operas, Gounod’s oeuvre includes symphonies, songs, and masses. His “Messe Solennelle (St. Cecilia Mass)” is particularly noted for its lush orchestration and choral writing. Gounod also made significant contributions to art songs, with works like “Sérénade” and “O ma belle rebelle”.
