Follies is an acclaimed 1971 Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Goldman. It tells the story of former cast members of Weissman Follies (a musical revue), reunited for the last time in their theatre which is about to be demolished. It focuses on two couples, Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone, who are attending the reunion.

The reunion brings back the fading stars, Ben and Sally, and focuses on their conflicts and regrets. They soon realize their past relationships with two other former Follies stars, Buddy and Phyllis, and the decisions they made together in their younger years. As the two couples reminisce, Sally and Buddy’s daughter, Emily, arrives — a young woman who has come to learn the truth about her parents’ past. Ultimately, the musical shows the power of redemption and the healing potential of self-reflection.

Opening on Broadway on April 4, 1971, the show was directed by Harold Prince and Michael Bennett (who also choreographed it). The musical was nominated for several Tony Awards and ran for over 500 performances. The musical has had a number of major revivals, and several of its songs have become standards, including “Broadway Baby”, “I’m Still Here”, “Too Many Mornings”, “Could I Leave You?”, and “Losing My Mind”.
