Commodores Backing Tracks – Brick House … Easy … Nightshift … Sail On … Still … Three Times A Lady
Commodores (The) were formed in 1967 and consisted of members Lionel Richie, Thomas McClary, William King, Andre Callahan, Michael Gilbert and Milan Williams. Although the line-up changed considerably over the years The Commodores legacy lives on in their beautiful harmonic ballads.
They signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for The Jackson 5 while on tour.
The group’s most successful period was in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer/songwriter. The band’s biggest hit singles such as “Easy“, “Three Times a Lady“, and “Nightshift” were best sellers and in 1986 the Commodores won their first Grammy for the song “Nightshift“.

The Commodores were formed in 1968 while the members were students at Tuskegee Institute. They began as a jukebox cover band and played locally in the mid-1970s, eventually catching the eye of Motown Records who signed them in 1972. Their first release was “Machine Gun,” which became a big hit and saw them open for the Jackson 5 on their 1973 tour.
In 1974, Lionel Richie took over lead vocals and the band’s sound shifted towards a funk-driven disco style. This proved successful and they had other hit singles such as “Just To Be Close To You” and “Fancy Dancer.” Their 1977 album The Commodores went double-platinum and contained four hit singles, including the popular “Brick House.”
The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the band reach its greatest commercial success. Richie wrote the hits “Easy” and “Three Times a Lady,” which reached number one on the Hot 100 in 1978 and 1979 respectively. They had two other number one singles in 1981, “Lady (You Bring Me Up)” and “Oh No,” and their 1982 album Commodores 13 peaked at number two on the Billboard 200.
In 1983, Lionel Richie left the band to focus on solo work and the band’s popularity gradually declined. However, they continued to tour and make music for nearly four more decades, releasing new albums and singles and performing hits from their earlier days.
The Commodores, now reduced to a trio continue to perform (as of 2017) to loyal fans around the world. They also manage their own Commodores Records label.
