Candi Staton is an American singer-songwriter, best known for her hit single “Young Hearts Run Free” and her disco smash “Nights on Broadway“. Staton began her career as a gospel singer and later moved into the genres of soul, R&B, and pop.

In the late 1960’s, Staton toured with soul singer Wilson Pickett as a backing vocalist. She subsequently signed with Capitol Records and released her debut single. The following year, she released the single “Young Hearts Run Free“, which was a massive hit, reaching no. 4 on the R&B chart and no. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was later featured in the 2004 film Mean Girls.

In the early 1970s, Staton released several albums to moderate success, including her self-titled debut in 1971 and Woman’s Touch in 1972. In 1976, she signed with Warner Bros. Records and released her album Music Speaks Louder Than Words. The album featured a cover version of the Bee Gees classic “Nights on Broadway”, which became a huge hit, reaching no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 4 on the Dance chart.

Staton’s music has been sampled by artists including Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mary J. Blige. In 1995, she collaborated with the British group The Source and released a remix version of “Young Hearts Run Free”. The single was a hit, reaching no. 8 in the UK. In 2011, Staton released her twenty-first studio album, Life Happens, and she was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame.
