The band released two albums in the mid-1980s, Sisters (1984) and Exile on Tweed Street (1986). They achieved some chart success with the singles “Bluebells”, “Young at Heart”, “All Things Must Pass” and “One More Challenge”. After the release of Exile on Tweed Street, the band split up in 1987.
In 1988, McCluskey and Ingram reformed the band with a new lineup, releasing their third album, The Singles, in 1989. This was followed by their fourth album, Ride the Bluebells, in 1991. The group eventually disbanded in 1992.
Since the band’s disbandment, all three founding members have experienced solo success. McCluskey has released two solo albums and Ingram has worked with fellow Edinburgh musician Edwyn Collins. Donegan, meanwhile, co-founded the independent record label, Poptones, which released albums by artists such as The Libertines, Suede and Stereolab.
The Bluebells have been credited with helping to shape the sound of British indie rock in the 1980s and their influence has been referenced by a number of prominent musicians, such as Noel Gallagher, Morrissey and Blur. They remain an important force in the music scene in Scotland.
