Billie Jo Spears (born in 1938) was an American country music singer. She reached the top 10 of the country music charts five times between 1969 and 1977. She also had a large following in the United Kingdom with two of her singles reaching the top five: “Blanket on the Ground” and “What I’ve Got In Mind”.

Born in Beaumont, Texas, Spears left home at the age of 16 and moved to California. There, she worked as a waitress and began to learn to play guitar. After moving to Nashville in the late 1960s, Spears earned a contract with United Artists Records.
Her debut album, Those Memories of You, was released in 1970 and was followed by two more albums of traditional country music. In 1975, Spears had her biggest hit, “Blanket on the Ground.” The song reached number three on the Billboard country music chart and immediately earned her national recognition. It was followed by the popular “What I’ve Got in Mind,” which peaked at number five.
Throughout the rest of her career, Spears released several more albums, including The Best of Billie Jo Spears, Greatest Hits, and Country Classics. She also reached the Top 10 with the songs “57 Chevrolet” and “Sing Me an Old-Fashioned Song.”
Although her popularity faded in the late 1980s, Spears remained an active performer. She was inducted into the George and Ira Gershwin Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997.
Spears died in her home in Vidor, Texas, on December 14, 2011, at age 74. She was posthumously inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.
