Barry White (born Barry Eugene Carter; September 12, 1944 – July 4, 2003) was an American composer and singer-songwriter. A three-time Grammy Award winner known for his distinctive bass-baritone voice and romantic image.

White grew up singing gospel songs with his mother and taught himself to play the piano.  He made his recording debut aged 11, playing piano on Jesse Belvin’s “Goodnight My Love” and made his first record “Little Girl” when he was 16 with a group called the Upfronts.  He worked for several record companies, talent scouting and overseeing the development of recording artists including the 5th Dimension, Viola Wills and Felice Taylor who had hits with “It May Be Winter Outside”, “I’m Under The Influence Of Love” and “I Feel Love Coming On”.  White started working with a girl group who he christened Love Unlimited.  He wrote “Walkin’ In The Rain (With The One I Love)” for them which became a hit in 1972.

White wanted then to work with a male artist.  He wrote several songs, but having made demos of himself singing and playing the piano, he was persuaded to record them himself.   This resulted in his first album “I’ve Got So Much Love To Give” in 1973.  His next idea was to write an instrumental album called the Love Unlimited Orchestra; from this came the single “Love’s Theme” which went to number one was a million-seller and was a smash hit all over the world.

From 1974 to 1979, White had hit after hit including “It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me”, “You See The Trouble With Me”, and “You’re The First, The Last, My Everything”

During the course of his career in the music industry, White Achieved 106 gold albums worldwide and worldwide record sales in excess of 100 million.  He is one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.
