Allen LaMar “Al” Wilson (June 19, 1939 – April 21, 2008) was an American soul singer known for the million-selling #1 hit, “Show and Tell”. He is also remembered for his Northern soul anthem, “The Snake”.

Allen Lamar Wilson was born in Cleveland, Mississippi, in 1934. As a child, he was recognised for his singing talent and was particularly fond of the music of Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, and Jackie Wilson. After graduating from high school, Wilson joined the Navy and was posted in Okinawa, Japan. It was during this time that he recorded his first demo and caught the attention of local record producers.
He also wrote and produced hit songs for other artists, including “I Can See Clearly Now” for Johnny Nash and “Love and Happiness” for Al Green.
Wilson’s music was widely influential and earned him numerous awards, including a Grammy nomination for his work on the soundtrack for the movie “Shaft”. He was also inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame, and in 2017, Wilson received the Mississippi Award from the Governor of Mississippi. Wilson passed away in 2020 at the age of 85. He left behind a musical legacy that continues to influence many today.
