Bill Withers was one of six children born in a small coal mining town in America. He was afflicted with a stutter from a young age but serving in the US Navy helped with this and also piqued his interest in singing and music.

He released his Grammy Award Winning debut single “Ain’t No Sunshine” from the album Just As I Am in 1971 followed by “Lean On Me”, taken from his second album, in 1972. Considering he was only visible on the music scene for approximately 8 years, Bill Withers name is known the world over, simply because of the few songs he wrote.

Withers was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, and four years later took part in the 2009 documentary Still Bill. This film gave an insight into the world of the soul musician and featured interviews, performances and rare access to his creative process in the studio.

In 2015, as his works continued to be covered and sampled across genres, Withers was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
