Freda Payne is an American singer and actress. Payne is best known for career in music during the mid–1960s through the mid–1980s. Her most notable record is her 1970 hit single, “Band of Gold”. Payne was also an actress in musicals and film and is the older sister of Scherrie Payne, a former singer with the American vocal group The Supremes.

Payne was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Meschel and Joshua Payne. Her father was a bricklayer who worked as a part-time musician, playing guitar and singing in nightclubs. Payne was encouraged to pursue a singing career by Jackie Wilson, for whom Payne’s older sister had been a backing singer. At age thirteen, Freda Payne made her first professional musical performance at the high school talent show at Northwestern High School in Detroit.

Payne’s first single, “Lonely Teardrops”, was released in 1960 and eventually sold over one million copies. She went on to record with such labels as Impact Records, Invictus Records, and Sue Records. Payne then began a stint with Capitol Records in 1968. Her biggest hit was “Band of Gold”, released in 1970 and reaching the top 5 on both the US and UK music charts. The single was certified gold for sales of over one million.

Payne also had hits with “Deeper and Deeper”, “Unhooked Generation” (1970), and “Bring the Boys Home” (1971). She also appeared in the 1971 movie The Stanford Prison Experiment, starring Billy Dee Williams.

In addition to her music career, Payne has also appeared on Broadway and on television. She had a recurring role as “Lena” in the soap opera Loving. She also served as a judge on the TV show Showtime at the Apollo.

In 1993, Payne returned to her Motown roots with the release of her album First Came Love. She has since released a number of albums, including Soul Temptation (1996) and Every Time (2006).

Payne has received numerous awards and honours throughout her career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 2001. In November 2013, she was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.
