From a young age, he demonstrated an interest in music. Consequently, he learned the basics of piano, drums, and guitar. As he progressed through high school, he went on to form his first band.

Initially, Gene made his first recordings in 1958 with a Connecticut singing group called the Embers. Though these recordings were completed early in his career, they were not released until 1990, showcasing the enduring appeal of his early work.

Advancing in his career, 1961 marked a notable year for Pitney. During this time, he scored his first chart single with the self-penned “(I Wanna) Love My Life Away,” which impressively made it to the Top 40. On this track, he played several instruments and multi-tracked the vocals, demonstrating his multifaceted talent. Furthermore, he followed that same year with his first Top 20 single, “Town Without Pity,” from the 1961 film of the same title. In doing so, he solidified his presence in the music industry with these consecutive hits.

Pitney had 16 Top-40 hits in the U.S. and 22 Top-40 hits in the UK. He wrote 60s hits including  “Rubber Ball” recorded by Bobby Vee, “He’s a Rebel” by the Crystals, and “Hello Mary Lou” by Ricky Nelson. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
