Accompaniment

Music that is played as background to a solo singer or lead instrumentalist

Accompaniment is the term used to describe the backing instruments, music or voice which supports and enhances the singer or the instrument being played. The accompaniment provides rhythmic and/or harmonic support, or background, for a lead melodic line.

The main types of musical accompaniment would be live or pre-recorded.

For example if you played an instrument for a recital, your teacher may accompany your piece on the piano. They don’t play exactly the same part as you, but it would enhance your performance with rhythm, harmony, chords and cues.
