Harry Lauder was a popular Scottish music hall singer and performer. By 1911 he was reported as being the highest paid performer in the world having achieved international success. He often performed in full Scottish traditional dress which included a kilt, sporran and tam-o-shanter.
As a youngster, he began his working life at age 11 in a flax mill and later spent a considerable amount of time as a miner. It was here that he began his music career, singing to his fellow miners before touring the music halls. By 1894 he had turned professional and began travelling further afield before switching to variety theatre and undertaking a tour in America.

He was in Australia at the time of First World War broke out and raised vast amounts of money for the war effort. He was knighted in 1919. He took semi-retirement in the mid-1930s, but emerged to entertain troops for a short while during the Second World War. By the late 1940s he was suffering from long periods of ill-health. He died in Scotland in 1950.
