Rufus Wainwright (born July 22, 1973) is an American-Canadian singer, songwriter, and composer. He has recorded several albums of original music and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. He has also written a classical opera and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theatre piece by Robert Wilson.

Wainwright has received Juno Awards for Best Alternative Album in 1999 and 2002 for Rufus Wainwright and Poses, respectively, and nominations for two other albums. He was nominated for Songwriter of the Year in 2008 for his Release the Stars album. He also composed the original music for choreographer Stephen Petronio’s work BLOOM which has toured across the country.
In addition to being a celebrated contemporary pop singer, Rufus has made a name for himself in the classical world. His first opera premiered in July 2009. He was commissioned by the Canadian Opera Company to write his second opera based on the story of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and Antinous. The new opera, Hadrian, premiered in October 2018.
He began playing the piano at age six, and started touring at age 13 with a folk group featuring Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. Wainwright became interested in opera during his adolescent years.
In addition to his tenor singing voice, Wainwright plays piano and guitar, often switching between the two instruments when performing live. His sister is often on stage with him as a backing singer.
