Glen Travis Campbell (born April 22, 1936) was an American rock and country music singer, musician, songwriter, television host and actor.

During his show business career, Glen Campbell released more than 70 albums. He sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 RIAA Gold albums, four Platinum albums and one Double-platinum album. His hits included “Gentle on My Mind”, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “Wichita Lineman”, “Galveston” and “Rhinestone Cowboy”.

Most of Glen’s family were musical and at age 4 his father gave him a guitar as a gift.  By the time he was 6 he was performing on local radio stations.

Campbell continued playing guitar in his youth and developed his talent by listening to radio and records. He dropped out of school in the 10th grade and got work. In his spare time Campbell started playing music at fairs and church picnics and singing gospel hymns in the church choir. He also found spots performing on local radio stations, and after his family moved to Houston, he made some appearances at a local nightclub.

In 1954, at age 17, Campbell moved to New Mexico, to join his uncle’s band and in 1958, he formed his own band, the Western Wranglers.

In 1960, Campbell moved to Los Angeles to become a session musician and played on recordings by artists such as the Beach BoysBobby DarinFrank Sinatrathe Monkees and Merle Haggard.

During the 1960’s and ’70’s he spent time as a touring band member with The Beach Boys. He also released a long series of singles and appeared in the movies True Grit (1969) with John Wayne and Kim Darby and Norwood (1970) with Kim Darby and Joe Namath.

The late 1970’a onwards saw Glen Campbell’s fame increase and he toured extensivley.

In 2005, Campbell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

He died in 2016 having developed Alzheimer’s in 2010.
