Their 1981 reworking of “Tainted Love” (originally a Northern Soul tune by Gloria Jones) has sold over 1 million copies and won Single Of The Year at 1982’s BRIT Awards. In the US, it spent a then record-breaking 43 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 (and still features among the Top 20 longest runs in American chart history). It was also a No.1 hit in 17 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany and South Africa.

In 1984, Soft Cell disbanded, with Almond pursuing a successful solo career and Ball taking a break from music. They reunited in 2001, and released several remix albums and one new studio album, Cruelty Without Beauty, in 2002.

In 2018, the duo announced their final tour and released a greatest hits compilation, Keychains & Snowstorms: The Singles. The duo performed their final concert together in London in September of 2018.
