The members first met at school, in the early 1990s, and formed a band at the age of 13. Alex Pennie was asked to join five years later (Alex left the group in 2007). Originally known as White Rabbit, they subsequently renamed themselves The Automatic. They recorded a two-track demo featuring rough versions of “Monster” and “Rats” in 2005 and landed a recording deal with B-Unique Records.

2005 saw the release of their debut single which they followed with a tour alongside The Kooks.
