Rose Royce are an American R&B soul music group. The band first formed under the name Total Concept Unlimited in the early 70s and the original members were: Kenny Copeland (lead vocals/trumpet), Lequient Jobe (basss/vocals), Michael Moore (saxophone), Freddie Dunn (trumpet), Walter McKinney (guitar), Michael Nash (keyboards), Henry Garner (drums/vocals), Kenji Brown (guitar/lead vocals), and Terral “Terry” Santiel (congas). Total Concept Unlimited toured in Japan with Edwin Starr in 1973 who introduced the group to the Motown music producer and songwriter Norman Whitfield. The band was renamed Rose Royce and female singer Gwen Dickey joined.

Their breakthrough came when they produced songs for the movie ‘Car Wash’ and the title song gained the number one spot on the Billboard 100 and the R & B charts.

The band continued to record albums and singles throughout the 80s and beyond, but never managed to recapture the success of the 70s. Rose Royce’s songs have been covered by such artists such as Madonna, Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Randy Crawford and Christina Aguilera.

At time of writing the group are still together with a mostly different line-up and continue to perform on stage on a regular basis.
